If Carbon is introduced during opal formation then black opal may be the result on very
rare occasions;

…so the dark background in Gem quality Black Opal is a natural carbon, a residue of
organic life. When coupled with a silica-opal overlay, it may form the purest crystal opal;
and flashing Black Opal is the result.

Therefore, it’s not just the myriad spectral colors that make opal valuable and beautiful;
but importantly for highly valued opal, it is the ferocity in the flash!
Brightly flashing opals are very rare and therefore, highly prized gems.
And natural Black Opal is the best and the brightest.

Introduced Black or “blackened” Opal
Gem quality crystal opal may well have a bright flash, yet with the introduction of a
blackened-background after shaping and sanding, the colors and “flash” of that gem will
be even brighter.

Opal doublets, triplets and Andamooka Matrix varieties have a black background
introduced during manufacturing to bring out the inherent flash in the crystal opal.

Value and pricing $$$
As a rough guide to price, these black-enhanced gems (ManicBlack’s Crypto Opal) sell
for around 2% of the cost of naturally occurring gem quality black opal.
Good value: So a 10 carat CryptoOpal costing $200 (10 x $20/carat = $200) would have
